“Œ`’n‹æ The offshore artificial island plays a part as an International Cargo Terminal Base of the "Marine Highway Network."
The first construction stage of the artificial island started in 1995. Lying in close proximity to East Asia, with its geographical location and historical affinity with the region, the island is hoped to become a hub of "General Exchange within East Asia", providing facilities that make the port a base for: international transport and distribution, marine product centered ocean industry, technology and cultural exchange, and recreation and communication with a marina at its core. Once this project is completed, this artificial island is expected to be a multipurpose international terminal whose central role in northern Kyushu will include serving the international trade sea routes covered by Techno Super Liners. It will also support open communication with rapidly developing East Asia, contribute to maintaining international competitiveness and realize a prosperous national lifestyle. At present, the project is in steady progress aimed at partial opening by 2006.
