Chofu Port Area is located in the Seto Inland Sea West Industrial Area, close to the eastern mouth of the Kanmon Strait.
For the purpose of developing the oceanfront industrial zone in the eastern part of Shimonoseki, a site of 4.3 hectares was reclaimed in 1992 as the Stage 1 Project. In addition, as a part of the second construction phase, the 11m deep berth construction has started from 2003, expecting its operation in 2006. With Municipal Transit Shed No. 1 completed in 1997, the processing capacity has improved significantly. At this port, large-sized tires are exported and cargo consisting mainly of lumber and nonferrous metals is imported. Furthermore, the Port of Chofu was opened in 2001 along with the expansion of the Port of Kanmon.
